Church's History

History of Mt. Moriah AME Church

One hundred and twenty six years ago a group of farmers, sharecroppers, cotton pickers, and domestic servants had a vision to establish a church in southern Russell County. Without the aid of government grants, tax incentives, and with limited support from the surrounding community, they scrapped together their limited resources and by their faith in God, their vision became a reality in the name of Mt. Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Much of the early history of Mt. Moriah is buried with our forefathers on whom we continue to stand. Mt. Moriah AME Church was first established in 1885. In May 1912, two acres of land was purchased in the amount of $40.00 by Bose Evans, Tony Cook and Pat Harmon-Trustees of Mt. Moriah. Some years later the church was destroyed by fire but rebuilt in 1941. There are memories of the bell being rung at the church when there was a death. Their mode of transportation was by feet or horse and buggy. There was no running water in the church and water had to be drawn from a well.

Time brings about a change, in 2003, under the leadership of Thomas W. Fortson the members began talking about renovating Mt. Moriah but the Pastor had a vision of building a new edifice. With that said, we began to work toward building a new edifice (making plans, raising monies, making pledges, etc.) It took us about 8 years to get this project completed but with patience and by the Grace of God, the new church was completed on October 19, 2010.

On January 2, 2011, following Church school at our old Zion we marched to our new Zion. The first sermon “Turn the Page” was preached by our Pastor Rev. Thomas W. Fortson with the scripture text from Philippians 3:12-14.

Mt. Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church, the church where a small group gathers with a whole lot of love, standing on the word of God, 126 years later. See What the Lord has Done. WHAT A BLESSING!!!!!!!!!!!!
